Thread: AGPC Cafe Recipes

    Does anyone have recipes for the desserts or other menu items served in the AGP cafe? My daughter would like to duplicate the chocolate mousse, cake, and sugar cookie we enjoyed on our visit to AGPC on Aug 13. We have similar recipes, but not exact. [img]graemlins/dish.gif[/img]

    You may want to contact CS or the cafe directly and inquire. I do not know of any AGP publication along those lines...

    Wish I had the recipe for the mini cinnamon rolls. Those were HEAVENLY!

    When I had butterfly-shaped sugar cookies for tea at AGPNY, my first thought was "this tastes EXACTLY like the shortbread I make for Christmas every year!" My daughter thought the very same thing. So if you want our recipe for shortbread, I'll be happy to post it.

    The only thing is the dough is pressed into a 9" x 13" pan and cut in squares or shaped into a circle on a cookie sheet and then cut in wedges. It's a recipe handed down from my husband's family in Scotland.

    I don't think the recipe would work as a cutout cookie dough because it's too crumbly. But if you want the same flavor, I'll post the recipe and you can figure out a way to make the dough work for cutout cookies. It might work if you simply knead the dough more so it sticks together more.

    We loved the Cafe desserts, too! We were so impressed with the whole lunch, and the way everything was presented so beautifully. The party planner in me was positively giddy with excitement! [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

    I would LOVE to have the recipe for those little cakes. They were devine!

    I loved the Cafe food, too. My DH came along and he was surprised that the food was pretty good. He thought it would be tiny, doll sized portions. I have pictures of a Cafe dinner in the album in my signature if anyone wants a close-up look at the food which is presented so nicely.

    Sorry it took me so many days to type this. I set the recipe card on the kitchen counter and plum forgot about it. The first recipe is the original. The second recipe is my own adaptation with minor changes and the one I make every year that tastes like the AG Cafe sugar cookies.

    Grandmother Ferguson's Shortbread

    1 lb butter
    1 1/4 cup sugar
    1 1/4 cup cornstarch
    3 1/2 cups flour
    Mix well. Press in ungreased 9 x 13 pan. Prick with fork. Bake 325 1 hr or till light gold.
    {edited NOTE: My husband's grandmother used rice flour in her shortbread. I'm not sure if she used it in place of the flour or the cornstarch. She doesn't use rice flour in the states anymore so the above recipe is what she gave me.)

    Julia's Shortbread

    3/4 lb unsalted butter (I always use LandO'Lakes brand butter)
    1/4 lb lightly salted butter
    1 1/4 cup fine sugar (See NOTE below)
    3 1/2 cup unbleached flour
    1 1/4 cup cornstarch

    NOTE: To make fine sugar, put it in a food processor to grind it up a bit till it is fine, but not as fine as powdered sugar. That makes the texture of the shortbread more delicate.

    1. Mix all ingredients well with your hands or mixer. Press dough in an ungreased 9" x 13" pan. Prick all over with a fork.
    2. Bake 1 hour at 325 or till light gold. Because my oven runs cooler, I usually have to bake another 15-20 mins till it's light gold. The top of the shortbread should be a yellow gold. If the shortbread isn't baked long enough, it may have a raw/floury taste so I usually test a piece from the middle of the pan after it's been baked 1 hr 10 mins. This is one cookie that is almost impossible to burn. Of course I've never tried, but you'd have to leave it in the oven a loooong time to burn it.
    3. Cool on a rack and cut into small squares while still warm.
    To make ahead, cut and cool completely. Wrap Shortbread squares tightly in plastic wrap then foil. May be frozen up to two months.

    I went to AGPNY today and looked into the new apron set for girl and doll.
    I had seen that it came with 5 recipees so I hoped they were the recipees from the cafe.
    Since the boxes were sealed, I asked one of the CS girl to open one for me just in case, even though she and another of the girls there thought they were recipees from the cafe.
    Well... glad I checked. The recipees are cute. They use miniature stuff to prepare doll-sized food (breadsticks to make subs, cherios to make donuts, etc.)
    But definitely nothing along the lines of cafe food!
